Biography:
Steve Webb was born in Birmingham, the younger of two sons. He attended the local comprehensive, from where he won a scholarship to read Politics, Philosopy and Economics at Hertford College, Oxford. He graduated from Oxford with a First in 1986 and began work as an economist at the Institute for Fiscal Studies.
During his time at IFS, Steve specialised in the workings of the personal tax and benefit system, and published widely on trends in poverty and inequality in the UK.
In March 1995 Steve was selected as the Liberal Democrat PPC for Northavon constituency. Given the non-political status of IFS, this prompted a move to a post as Professor of Social Policy at Bath University, a post, which, Steve held until his election to Parliament in May 1997. After being re-elected in the general election of 2001, he was promoted to the Liberal Democrat Shadow Cabinet as Shadow Secretary for Work and Pensions.
Steve is married to Helen, who, at the time of their marriage was an Anglican Curate working in London. She subsequently became assistant chaplain at Southmead Hospital near Bristol, which prompted the couple's move to the West Country. They have one daughter, Charlotte, who was born in December 1995 and one son, Dominic, born in May 1998, and live at Olveston, within the Northavon constituency.
