Biography:

David Laws won the Observer Mace National Schools Debating Competition (1984) and joined the Liberal Democrats in 1984.

He won a scholarship to King's College, Cambridge (Double First Class Honours, Economics).

He was Managing Director at Barclays Bank before joining the Liberal Democrats as the Parliamentary Party's Economic Advisor in 1994 and was author of the 1994 and 1995 Liberal Democrat Alternative Budgets.

David's policy interests include Education, Economics and Environment.

From 1997 - 1999 he was the party's Director of Policy and Research, and in 2001 he took over from Paddy Ashdown as MP for Yeovil. He was appointed Shadow Chief Secretary to the Treasury in 2002.
